Custom Blanket Program Overview
Thank you for your interest in creating custom knit throw blankets with us.
Mineola Knit Co. is a leading manufacturer in the knit throw blanket industry and the production partner behind many well-known brands. Our clients range from independent artists and popular consumer brands to prominent art galleries, museum shops, and S&P 500 companies.
This overview answers the questions we hear most often about fabric weights, sizes, colors, fibers, pricing terms, and lead times, so you can plan your custom blanket with confidence.
Fabric & Construction
Knit Gauge
Two fabric weights: 7 gauge and 12 gauge
Gauge (gg) is the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine. A lower gauge produces a thicker, heavier fabric. We offer two gauges:
| Gauge | Fabric | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 7 gg | Heavier and thicker. Our most popular choice. | Blankets and scarves |
| 12 gg | Lighter weight | Scarves and pillow covers |
Blanket Sizes & Weights
Standard, kids', and long sizes, with weights by fiber
All sizes below are for our 7-gauge knit. Our maximum width is 60″. Length can exceed 100″.
Adult sizes
| Size | Notes |
|---|---|
| 50 × 60″ | Standard size and our most popular |
| 70″ length | Long |
| 80″ length | Extra long. A production surcharge applies for the additional handling. |
Kids' sizes
| Size (W × L) | Notes |
|---|---|
| 24 × 30″ | Infant (small) |
| 30 × 40″ | Our most popular kids' size |
| 36 × 48″ | Toddler (large) |
Weight by fiber
Approximate finished weight of a standard 50 × 60″, 4-color blanket:
| Fiber | Approx. weight |
|---|---|
| Recycled Cotton | 2.5–2.6 lbs |
| Organic Cotton and Egyptian Cotton | 2.8–2.9 lbs |
| Merino Wool | 3.0 lbs |
Number of Colors per Design
We recommend 4 colors; up to 6 are possible
Each color in your artwork is knit with its own yarn. The number of colors affects how the blanket feels.
| Colors | How it is built | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Our standard construction | Recommended. Gives the best softness and drape. |
| 2 or 3 | Same construction as 4 colors | Same feel as a 4-color blanket |
| 5 or 6 | Denser construction, with more yarn in each stitch | Heavier and denser feel |

Fibers
Fiber Options
Five yarns, from recycled cotton to extra-fine Merino
Good to know
- Every fiber is machine washable and can be tumble dried on low heat.
- You can combine RC, CC, OC, and EC in one blanket for an additional charge.
- Merino wool cannot be combined with other fibers.
About Our Merino Wool
Why ours is softer, itch-free, and pills less
Most Merino wool on the market is 21 microns in diameter with a fiber length of about 50 mm. Ours is finer and longer.
| Typical Merino | Mineola Merino | |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber diameter | 21 micron | 19.5 micron |
| Fiber length | ~50 mm | 70 mm |
- No itch. Itchiness comes from thick fibers. People with sensitive skin begin to notice it with wool coarser than 21 microns (a higher micron number means a thicker fiber). We use only extra-fine 19.5-micron Merino, so our blankets stay comfortable against the skin.
- Less pilling. Longer fibers hold together better, so the fabric performs better over time.
- Responsibly sourced. Virgin Australian wool, certified mulesing-free, spun in Europe and dyed in Italy.
- Easy care. Superwash treated, so it can be machine washed and tumble dried on low heat.
This quality costs more, but we believe it is the right fiber for a blanket you will use every day.
About Our Egyptian Cotton
The longest and strongest cotton we offer
Egyptian cotton is recognized as one of the finest cottons in the world. Its fibers are much longer than other cottons, and the species is about 30% stronger. Together, length and strength make it the premium choice among cottons. Only about 3% of the world's cotton is Egyptian, and it has a subtle sheen along with its softness.

About Our Organic Cotton
Grown more sustainably, spun for softness and strength
Organic cotton is valued as a more sustainable fiber. It is grown without synthetic pesticides and uses less water during farming. Its fibers, however, are naturally shorter than those of conventional cotton (about 1.0″ compared with 1.1″ on average).
- Organic cotton is not long-staple. Because its fibers are short by nature, any brand claim describing organic cotton as "long-staple" is inaccurate and amounts to false advertising.
- Shorter fibers mean lower strength. Yarn spun from shorter fibers has less tenacity, so it is naturally weaker than yarn made from longer fibers.
- Softness comes from how the yarn is spun. A yarn's softness depends largely on its twist and spinning technique. We specify an optimal twist for both the single yarns and the plied yarn in our organic cotton, balancing softness with the durability that home textiles require.
Our View on Recycled Fibers
What to know before choosing recycled cotton
Recycled cotton is our most popular fiber, and we are glad to make it for you. As a responsible manufacturer with 30 years in the fiber and yarn industry, we also want to share an honest view of how recycled textiles work.
- Recycled cotton needs polyester. Post-consumer cotton fibers are short (about 0.5″ on average) and not strong enough to hold together on their own. That is why recycled cotton yarn is blended with polyester.
- Short fibers also limit how the yarn is spun. Because its fibers are short, recycled cotton is spun using the open-end (OE) method, while higher-quality yarns made from longer fibers are spun using the ring-spinning (RS) method. Open-end spinning is faster and less expensive, but it produces a yarn that feels rougher and is weaker. Ring spinning is slower and costs more, but it gives the yarn a noticeably softer hand and greater durability. Of the two, ring-spun yarn is clearly the superior quality.
- Most recycled polyester comes from bottles, not textiles. The majority of recycled polyester is regenerated from PET plastic bottles rather than from used, dyed textiles. Reclaiming textile waste requires an energy-intensive chemical process: the polyester must be broken down (depolymerization), rebuilt (repolymerization), and stripped of its dyes before it meets the quality standards needed to be reused and re-dyed. Industry estimates indicate that less than 1% of recycled polyester comes from used textiles, so the overproduced textiles that end up in landfills are almost never reclaimed.
- Recycled polyester takes plastic out of a better loop. A PET bottle can be recycled back into new bottles again and again, for up to six lifetimes, before it finally goes to a landfill. Once that plastic is diverted and dyed for textiles, it can be recycled only once.
- Sustainability claims can drive overproduction. When products are marketed as highly sustainable, brands tend to produce more. Industry figures suggest that more than 30% of textile production goes unused and ends up in landfills, where polyester can take a century or more to break down.
With this knowledge, we believe the most responsible path is to make better-quality products built for longevity and performance, made locally, on demand, and in short runs.
